Experiences

I will always remember the first time I met the Siri Singh Sahib. It was in the Spring of 1970, and I had been attending yoga classes, at Ahimsa Ashram in Washington D.C., for about a month.  I had no idea what to expect, except that other students, who had seen him before, spoke of him in only superlatively positive terms.  Upon seeing him at the airport, I had a strange sensation of electrical energy going through me that was so intense, I could barely keep my balance.  I really couldn’t understand what was happening to me, but it was pretty clear, that there was something very special about this man.

Although much of the way was on back roads, and not clearly shown on any map, it struck me as I drove how impossible it seemed to be, to make a wrong turn.  Every tentative choice turned out to be exactly right and on a direct route to the town.  I also discovered that everything I personally would need for comfort on this trip was being almost immediately provided, near the moment of thinking of it.  This included food, water, rest stops – even once when I started getting very hot and tired and thought of how good it would be to rest beside a lake, I turned the next corner and found one there – a clear and quiet mountain lake with fir-lined shores!

The end of my “guided mission”, was in the town itself.  I drove through and looked over the center of town – a gas station and store /post office combination that was now closed.  After going by several scattered houses, I decided to stop at one to see if anyone knew of this man.  The house was his, and although he was away hiking at the time, the message was soon delivered.

“So what, everyone has problems, what makes you so special?”  Not to be dismissed easily, I went further into my problem, not realizing that I really had nothing to worry about.  Then, he said:  “Well, if your problem really bothers you (still kind of heavy with me, no visible compassion), have you dedicated your life to live and die as a teacher?” I thought for a moment and then replied, “I have.”  Siri Singh Sahib Ji, then replied, “Then don’t worry about your problems, God will take care of them for you.”

Since that day, I have felt an unfailing strength and commitment, and have never once entertained even a moment of doubt.  When someone calls upon me to make a sacrifice, my head is given.  My destiny has been sealed, and whenever things seem to be difficult, I remember the Siri singh Sahib’s words and feel ready to undergo anything.

The Siri Singh Sahib has called us, carried us, armed us with a Dharma, and is sending us on back to God and Guru.

It’s taken me six very long years to realize, that I honestly would have been messed up without you.  How could I hate you? You? My “wise man?”  I tried to, through my fear and ignorance Siri Singh Sahib Ji, but your trust, and confidence in me, wouldn’t let me.  Your patient guidance, and your hawk eyes didn’t even let me dip my toes in trouble’s stream.

This is a subjective portrait, in words, of this human.  To me he is more than a man or spiritual teacher.  To me, he is self—realized and God-realized, he is the reality and essence of the words love, courage, and grace. So many times, he has reached my soul and given me only peace and love.  So many times, he has shared his knowledge, to help me understand and to accept.  So many times, he has inspired me to keep up, to live with courage, and with grace.

Siri Singh Sahib Bhai Sahib Harbhajan Singh Khalsa Yogiji,-then known simply as Yogi Bhajan, sat on the platform  in a meeting hall, in Berkley, California.  It was the room where on-going Kundalini Yoga classes et twice taught by a student teacher.  That night the Siri Singh Sahib himself, came to teach us, and be with us.  It was the first time I saw him.

During the first tour of India (1970-1971), we had come to the Golden Temple, and many of us were planning to take the Amrit.  I was serving as secretary for this tour and so the Siri Singh Sahib and I had spent the whole morning getting everyone ready.  We had instructed everyone to wash their hair, had distributed kacheras, kirpans, and everything they needed to take their Amrit vows.  Finally, we proceeded to walk to the Akal Takhat, where the Panj Piare awaited us.

As pride consumed my innocence and falsehood claimed me,
your everlasting strength and goodwill kept me from losing all,
from losing all.

And now all that I once valued does not matter because
as you have said, none of this shall remain,
for we belong to a True One, a True One.

And though there’s more to learn, and live in this life,
your selflessness to continue serving soothes my longing, soothes my longing.

And when the Truest sends the blessing that we may return,
I thank God truly for sharing this space with you, with kind you.

“Are you ready to go?” he said looking at me sitting in the corner.  I had tacitly reserved that corner of the ashram, to quietly but determinedly learn the techniques of the Yoga of Awareness and listen to the practical wisdom, channeled through this incredible man.

“You must all stand on your own feet, not worship mine; you must all become teachers.” I knew I was included in that edict, but that question was so direct, so soon – I didn’t answer, and he said, “not yet?”
