Experiences

Yogiji respected women.  He saw a woman as the mother of creation, and as life’s first teacher.  He created “K.W.T.C” (Khalsa Women’s Training Camp), an experiential platform to know their potential, discover their true identities, establish a sisterhood, and build a support system.  Women came together and created a village of angels.  They set up their tents like little homes under the beautiful blue skies of New Mexico.

“You have to develop an intuitive sense of communication so you may not incur karma. . . . Whatever you say, whatever it is, you have the right to speak. But whatever you may say which incurs karma, you shall pay for it. It will catch up with you, maybe now, maybe later. What do you think you are? Intelligent? Yes. You think you are very wise? Yes. You think you are very experienced? Yes. You think you have knowledge? Yes. You have everything? You have nothing! All you have is your word. Everything else is background. Everything else is the background and environments that influence you to speak. Whatever you speak, that’s it!…”

This mantra has pulled me out of the soup on more than one occasion, including a time when I narrowly escaped a violent mugging. This mantra, as I experience it, has the potential to shift time and space. We never start a journey on a transport vehicle (trains, planes and automobiles!) without first chanting and surrounding ourselves with a dome of protection. You really have to project your aura when you’re on an airplane.

The Mangala Charan mantra is highly regarded by lovers of Kundalini Yoga as one of the gems of protection and courageous personal projection.

When I first discovered 3HO and Kundalini Yoga in my teens, I was fortunate to come upon an opportunity to intimately learn the sounds of the mantras through the study of Gurmukhi, the alphabet used in the sacred Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This alphabet contains the sounds vibrated in the ancient mantras found in Kundalini Yoga kriyas and meditations.

Turning crisis into opportunity is like a type of sublimation, but it is also the essence of Chardi Kala. It is our choice how we choose to create our own realities and with the practice of Kundalini Yoga and the support of the Golden Chain of all those teachers and masters who have walked before us and who are with us now, we can stay steadfast in our faith in Creation, humble in our dealings, neutral in our minds and abundant in our hearts.

As Yogi Bhajan said, mantra literally means mental wave, mental vibration. So by reciting a mantra we cut old patterns and set up a new vibration. There is no need to drown in negativity and depression. It truly becomes possible to transform the mind, to feel a deep sense of belonging to my spirit. As I watch people around me struggle with their own longing, I hope my words can help others to find their inner peace and know that they belong.

In the midst of that fullness, perhaps, on his second or third visit, the Siri Singh Sahib was sitting up on the front platform gazing at the ceiling.

“Look! This Gurdwara was really built properly. There are 11 Gurus and there are 11 vigas.”

That was when I realized, that although the community came together, and there some who had spent most of the year working, it was truly the Guru who had built his Gurdwara.

Gateway to the Soul gives you the powerful effects of the Banis in English translation, to open your heart, steady your mind, and connect you with your strength, courage, and Infinite Consciousness. Listening to or reciting the Banis gives you inner balance, grace, radiance, and energy; stopping the negative cycle of the mind and reversing its thought forms. Although the greatest benefit of the Banis is through recitation in the original Gurmukhi, Gateway to the Soul offers them in English, with musical accompaniment, so you can enjoy their subtle, joyful vibrations. The Banis are truly meant to be experienced by the heart.

Yogi Bhajan once spoke about the relationship between the neutral mind and intuition, or inner guidance. He explained that the neutral mind has its own mantra: “Guide me to the Lord, my Lord.” Right now, take a moment to slow your breath. Repeat these words for three minutes. When you are done, notice the quality of your thoughts and how you feel. Let this practice become a habit.

From the onset, I always wondered who these beautiful people were. Gracefully dressed in white and so respectful of everyone in their presence and each other. I never inquired formally back then. I felt I didn’t want to disturb the blissful flow of service while dining. I simply served what they’d asked for and gently observed from a distance.

I see that time as the beginning of my waking up from the illusionary experience of my own habitual thoughts, and emotions—which are simply more deeply believed and embodied thoughts—that formed my identity of myself in the world as a male: contracted, scared, in fear and full of rage. Then came more pain. It wasn’t easier now that I had started to wake up. It was actually more difficult for quite a while, because I saw that the struggle was right inside me. Finally, I broke down and prayed. I asked the Tratakum picture, “What do I do? Just tell me, please!” The answer came quickly, “Do Nothing.”

You can think all day about being motivated, but what does that accomplish? Probably not much. The Manipura (3rd Chakra) is located in the space between the navel and the Solar Plexus, and acts as the seat of the sense of self and the center of gravity of the physical body. If balanced, the physical self will be radiant and the mental body will resist negativity!
