“Sat Nam is the bij, or seed, mantra. It is small and potent. Great things grow from it. If it is not written in your destiny to be with God and to know higher consciousness, this mantra will engrave it in your destiny.”
-Yogi Bhajan, Aquarian Teacher Manual, p. 113

When I first discovered 3HO and Kundalini Yoga in my teens, I was fortunate to come upon an opportunity to intimately learn the sounds of the mantras through the study of Gurmukhi, the alphabet used in the sacred Siri Guru Granth Sahib. This alphabet contains the sounds vibrated in the ancient mantras found in Kundalini Yoga kriyas and meditations.

I learned that there is a significant specificity to it—where you place your tongue precisely and how the lips come together. This action powerfully creates the desired effect by stimulating the 84 meridians and glands of the brain, according to Yogi Bhajan.

I fell in love with reciting these sounds with precision and flow. I enjoyed the dance of the tongue and the lips, directing the vibration of the voice’s sound current. It was at once a sensual healing massage and a spiritual tool, leading to a sensation of upliftment and well-being, and giving the life-transforming experience of lasting increased awareness.

There is power in the sound current of mantra when we meditate with it silently as well, or have it playing in the background. There is even power if your pronunciation is not exact. Play with the gift of Mantra, set your mind free, and have fun!

Your experience is important!
