It is hard for me to express which experiences are the most significant and the most valuable in terms of personal development. I can only think of one thing that still goes with me every single day and it becomes my anchor for making my decisions through my career. Discipline is my north star and guides me through every decision that I make and tailors my life to a healthy, happy, and holy lifestyle. The early mornings, the constant cleaning and the regular formations are just exampling that MPA has given in order to induce discipline in students. MPA provided me with the necessary tools that I need in order to live a successful life. It taught me that to become a reverent person in life.

There is no education like MPA. MPA has given me context to my overall world view in a way that impacts every aspect of my life. The self-confidence, independence, and composure/meditative mind that are often necessary in my work (and in all aspects of life) were developed throughout my time at MPA. Just today, one of my law partners mentioned to me how unique and valuable my schooling in India was. Not that she had to tell me, because it’s a part of who I am.

If you’re working at a job you don’t like or in a relationship you don’t like or if you have to tell someone something they don’t want to hear but they need to hear, you just do it by pushing yourself forward to do it. Not in an impetuous way, but by keeping up through keeping your eye on the goal. Not waiting for something to be over but staying focused and in the moment because that’s definitely when I’ve been the most on point and the happiest. If I’m thinking about an end point or a goal and telling myself ‘if I just get through this, I’ll be happy’; that’s not nearly as fulfilling as being in the present and using that grit to power through a challenge.

Yogi Bhajan told us that we should make “God” a part of our child’s life, but what does that mean? For some people, the concept of God is rooted deep in the dogmatic instruction of their youth. And while many have rejected that simplistic view, it is sometimes difficult to give voice to exactly what we think God is. The concept of God, as Yogi Bhajan shared with us, is not the concept of a magical-man in the sky. It is a Generating, Organizing, and Destroying energy that pervades the universe and all creation, including you and me. It is not something outside of us, but inside and all around us. “There is no God outside of you. Neither was, nor is, nor shall be. It is all in you. The very breath of life is divine.” ~Yogi Bhajan, 8/22/1986

During my days in Amritsar I spent most of my time at Miri Piri Academy and being with Narayan. I was really impressed with how Miri Piri Academy has grown. The school is beautiful and the kids are really great. Every afternoon after school I had fun playing sports with the kids which was great. I wish I had a school like this when I was in boarding school 25 years ago in India. Whenever I see parents with kids I always try to encourage them to check out the school.

The time that these kids spend in India at Miri Piri Academy together is priceless. They get an experience that the wouldn’t get in America or most other western countries. Every time I talk to Narayan I can hear in his voice how he is growing and changing in so many ways. He just keeps telling me how much fun he is having and how much he likes it. There are other schools that Sikh kids could go to, but MPA is unique and has the balance of education and spirituality that I relate to. I remember Narayan being excited when he was getting ready to go to MPA and wanting to meet the new “Tibetan” kid who was also starting school that year. There are many different kids from different parts of the world and religious backgrounds.
